Culture, Beliefs, History, and Helpful Information About Messiah
Frequently Asked Questions
FAQs
When and where do you worship?
We gather Sundays at 10:00 a.m. at 91-679 Fort Weaver Rd, Ewa Beach, HI 96706. Park in any open spot. Come a few minutes early if you’d like to find a seat and say hello — and plan on staying after for a meal and fellowship out on the lanai.
I’ve never been to a Lutheran church. What’s it like?
A little structure, a lot of grace. We sing, we pray, we read Scripture, we hear a sermon, and we share communion. The whole thing runs about an hour. You don’t need to know when to stand or what to say —people around you will help, and nobody’s keeping score.
What should I wear?
Whatever you’ve got. Some folks come in aloha shirts, some dress up a little more. All of it’s fine here.
What does LCMS mean?
Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. It’s the church body Messiah belongs to. The short version: we’re a Christ-centered, Bible-believing congregation in the Lutheran tradition.
What do you actually believe?
That God saves people by grace, through faith in Jesus — not by anything we earn or clean up about ourselves first. Scripture is our foundation, and the cross is the center of everything. If you want the longer conversation, Pastor Uma is always happy to have it.
Can I take communion?
We practice what’s called close communion, which is the historic Lutheran understanding: those who commune with us share our confession of faith. If you’re visiting, you’re warmly invited to come forward for a blessing, and we’d love to talk with you about communing here. The easiest thing is a quick word with Pastor Uma before the service.
Is there anything for my kids?
We truly believe in engaging all of God’s children in worship, so there’s a Keiki message in every service just for them. Children are welcome in worship, wiggles and all.
I’m still figuring out what I believe. Am I welcome?
Yes. Pastor Uma came to faith as a college student who wasn’t looking for it, so questions don’t scare him. You’re welcome exactly as you are, wherever you are.
We’re a mixed-culture family, and English isn’t everyone’s first language. Will we fit in?
You’ll fit right in. Messiah is a genuinely mixed congregation — different backgrounds, different accents, one church. It’s part of what we love about this place.
How do I become a member?
Start with a conversation. We hold a membership class every six months, and Pastor Uma will walk you through it.
How do I arrange a baptism, wedding, or funeral?
Reach out to Pastor Uma directly at pastormessiahewabeach@gmail.com. He’ll help you with the next steps.
How can I give or support the church?
You can give in person on Sunday, online, or by mail.
